Tweeter Street

Tweeter Street – Images by Michael Hughes

Tweeter Street is a new project that I have started shooting. I photograph people who tweet, where they tweet with what they tweet. The idea came to me while browsing the “tweets nearby” function on my phones Twitter application.
Tweeter Street is an ongoing project and I plan to take it all over the UK and hopefully worldwide.
If you would like to be part of Tweeter Street just drop me a line or get me on Twitter. You can keep up to date with all the Tweeter Street news on the Facebook page. To see who’s in on the street already check out www.tweeterstreet.com

365 Days in Pictures

The 365 days in pictures project has been receiving great feedback and is proving to be both fun and challenging to shoot.
Each month one lucky person will win a free print. To win a print is easy, all you have to do is go to the Facebook page and click like on your favourite picture. The picture with the most likes is nominated as the months winning picture. Everyone who has clicked like on that particular picture will be entered into a lottery and a winner will be chosen at random.

Financial Times House and Home

Above is a tricky cover picture I shot for the Financial Times House & Home section. I had to get an interesting shot of Tom, the architect, and his model of the new house he is set to build. After a few different set-ups which didn’t really work for me, I asked Tom to pose as carrying out some work on his model house. This helped to add a bit of movement and animation to what otherwise would have been a static image. Arranging my lights to bounce off the wall behind Tom and the model house, I was able to cast a nice light on the model and to create a silhouette of Tom, which resulted in an interesting image.

Gabby Young

Above is a picture of singer Gabby Young that I shot for the Financial Times Weekend. As you can see Gabby is quite a colourful character and made for a great set of pictures. It was a fun shoot and we shot a variety of different set ups. It was nice to see that the FT gave the picture a good show too! You can listen to Gabby’s music here

Row to the Pole

Row to the Pole from Michael Hughes on Vimeo.

The brief for this assignment was to get pictures that could be sent out to media outlets and tell the story of the day. Around 48 VERY fit people attended the Eton College Rowing Club to take part in the heats for a once in a lifetime chance to win a single available space in the boat to row to the north pole with explorer Jock Wihsart. The day consisted of mental as well as physical testing. I was exhausted just watching them. Big round of applause for everyone who took part.

Conkers

My work has taken me to different places all over the world and have seen the good, the bad and the ugly. On Sunday I was shooting the World Conker Championships which has to be classified in the “strange” category.
The most bizarre moment came when I asked if I could join the compere guy who was on a temporary scaffolding unit. It was a two tier block and I just needed to get a pic of the overall competing area from above. GV (general view) as we call it in the biz. I was a bit shocked when I asked if I could climb up to join him as I was declined under health and safety reasons!! Nobody said a word about health and safety when I was in the firing line of the conkers!
I arrived on at the competition site early and photographed Cameron Daenke and Ryan D’souza practising as the Sun was rising and burning through the foggy sky.

Chippy of the Year

Chippy of the Year 2010 from Michael Hughes on Vimeo.

Thought I would put this film of the the Atlantic Fast Food Take Away up. I shot this earlier in the year when they were announced the 2010 Fish and Chip Shop of The Year.
I am really getting into making these short films and think that they are a great way to tell stories. Combining pictures, audio and moving image can have fantastic results.
